Kovalam Beach
Three to four decades of rampant tourism hasn’t done a thing to damage the serenity of this place. The beach at Kovalam is a long stretch of sand, dotted with beach lounges and chairs. The beach area can be divided into three crescent-shaped ones – Lighthouse beach, Hawah beach and Kovalam Beach.
Kovalam is one of the best beaches in the subcontinent, second only to the ones of Goa. Swimming, surfing and water sports are common here. The airport is 14km from Kovalam. There is a red-and-white lighthouse that stands 35m high on the Kurumkal Hillock. It is open to the public. Another pastime would be a backwater cruises in the Karamana backwaters. Houseboats and pedal boats are plenty. You can also stop by at Edayar and Pozhikkara islands.
Chowara Beach, 18km from town, is popular with tourists as it is a less-crowded beach than Kovalam. Poovar island, one that sits between the sea and the Karamana estuary is known for private beaches and private island resorts.
The Vellayani Lake is 7km from Kovalam, and is known for the snake boat races during Onam. The Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour nearby is only 17km from Trivandrum. At Vizhinjam, the cave temple is protected by the ASI. It is believed to have been built around the 9th and 10th centuries.
