About Trivandrum

Trivandrum gets its name from Thiruvananthapuram, which means ‘the sacred abode of Anantha’. Thiruvanathapuram became Trivandrum once the British found it difficult to pronounce the difficult word. The city covers more than 250sq.km. The largest freshwater lake in the district, Vellayani Lake, is situated in the suburbs of Trivandrum. Trivandrum’s main rivers are the Karamana River and the Killi River.

Built on seven low hills, there’s more than just the average hill station to choose from. Trivandrum is a medium-sized district. But don’t be fooled – there’s an array of activities for the dreamy traveler. If you aren’t the sporty kind, and water sports and trekking aren’t for you, there are museum and palace visits, zoo visits, beach stays and more!

Trivandrum was ruled by the Ay kings till the 10th century and then by the Venads. Marthanda Varma moved the capital of Travancore from Padmanabhapuram in Kanyakumari to Trivandrum in 1745.

The international airport connects this south Indian city with major cities of Asia and the Middle East. The railway station is centrally located and connects Trivandrum with all major metros and cities of India. There are local as well as long-distance buses that link Trivandrum with cities of south India. It is also an important cruise destination.
